Teer Coatings Ltd previously won the contract to supply magnetrons to coat the Royal Observatory UK Astronomy Gemini 8metre telescope mirrors which were installed at the observatories at Mauna Kea, Hawaii and Cerro Pachon, Chile.

The magnetrons that were supplied, each 1.6m long, were required to meet stringent requirements of uniformity combined with high deposition rate. For this contract water cooled shutters and specially designed masks were provided as part of the overall systems which were installed at the observatories at Mauna Kea, Hawaii and Cerro Pachon, Chile.

To enable full testing of the magnetrons prior to supply a large vacuum chamber 2m long and 1m diameter was constructed. Having completed the testing programme for this contract the large vacuum chamber has now been converted into a large PVD coating system and is currently installed in our production coatings facility which allow us to extend our production coatings service to include items such as long broaches and large dies.

More information about the gemini project can be found on the gemini web site.
